What it does

The Mac app, Totals Export, reads the bank SMS stored in Messages on your Mac and shows you the transactions it finds. When you're ready, it sends them straight to Totals on your iPhone over your Wi-Fi.

Your iPhone parses them the same way it parses new messages and skips transactions it already has, so running an import twice doesn't double anything.

Before you start

  • A Mac on macOS 10.15 or later, Intel or Apple Silicon.
  • Your bank SMS on that Mac. Turn on Messages in iCloud on your iPhone (Settings → your name → iCloud → Messages) and in Messages on your Mac (Messages → Settings → iMessage). The first sync can take a while.
  • The latest Totals on your iPhone, from the App Store.
  • Your Mac and iPhone on the same Wi-Fi.

Set it up

  1. Download Totals Export, open the DMG, and drag Totals Export into Applications.
  2. Open it. macOS only lets an app read Messages with Full Disk Access, so turn it on in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access. The app has a button that takes you there. Then quit the app and open it again.
  3. Click Read chat.db and look over the transactions it found. You can narrow it to a date range or pick which senders to include.
  4. Click Send to phone. A QR code appears.
  5. On your iPhone, open Totals and go to Tools → Import from Mac → Scan code. Review the list, then import. If either device asks about local network access, allow it.

What leaves your Mac

Nothing goes over the internet. The app reads Messages on your Mac, and the transfer runs directly between your Mac and iPhone over an encrypted connection that only the QR code opens.

Only messages from banks Totals supports are sent. Your other conversations stay where they are.

If something doesn't work

  • “Totals Export can't be opened.” macOS blocks apps that arrive through the Mac App Store version of Telegram. Download it from this page instead, or run this in Terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/TotalsExport.app
  • It still asks for Full Disk Access. Quit the app completely (⌘Q) and open it again. macOS only applies the setting on a fresh start.
  • It finds no bank messages. Your SMS aren't on this Mac yet. Check that Messages in iCloud is on for both devices and that your bank messages show up in the Messages app.
  • The iPhone can't connect. Put both on the same Wi-Fi and allow Totals in Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network. Guest and public networks often stop devices from reaching each other.
